some say cocoa, some say cacao

Nibs

On Sunday after too much shopping with my Mum and Honeyb, we went to M&S to grab some refreshments on the go. I picked up a bar of M&S Sao Tome 75% chocolate with cocoa nibs for myself, a three pack of walnut whips for Mum and Winnie the Poo chocolate lollipops for Honeyb.

M&S claim their chocolate is made from the ‘finest forastero beans’ which made me a bit suspect of what I might taste. But to my surprise, the bar was good and redeemed itself because of the crunchy nibs. It had a bitter and burnt taste, the nibs were sharp giving a texture like chocolate mixed with crushed nuts.  There was no way I could let it melt in my mouth because the temptation to crunch was too much! And I found myself nibbling nibs for a few minutes after eating a square so I suppose it had good lasting value (good length.

Similarly, there was no way Honeyb would let her lollipop chocolate melt in her mouth. She made fine use of those 3 hard earned back teeth and chomped her way thru the chocolate. I think she liked it. And I love them  not only because she is so adorable when she is eating them, but also because having the chocolate on a stick help minimises the food mess a 14 month old can make.

As for Mum, that was a revelation. As a child I always remember Mum having a walnut whip and Dad having a Fry’s Cream after a long days work. Since Sunday I now know that Mum likes the walnut on top of the walnut whip … Dad used to eat the rest. So I got ’stuck’ with a 3 pack of whips … poor me, eh?
