O Conaill Milk Chocolate Truffles

October 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

My little bro is becoming a bit of a foodie and I am getting some treats as a result. The last time he came to visit he brought Wildes organic chocolate bars, this visit he came with a box of O Conaill Milk Chocolate Truffles. A long narrow box, with truffles lined up side by side inside, is minimalist and understated for a chocolatier. Many of the traditional truffle boxes come with bows, pretty decorations etc.

The truffles themselves are big, we are talking 3 bite truffles. The praline is thickly coated in a creamy milk chocolate. There is nothing delicate here, I could nearly bring them on the Art O’Neill hike and they would protect themselves in my rug sack through the night. The milk chocolate is glossy and very melt-in-the-mouth (35% cocoa solids), the filling is mostly smooth, sweet with a gentle nutty taste. The texture is reminiscent of the filling in the custard cream biscuits I grew up on. It is not too creamy but not dry and crumbly either.

I did enjoy these truffles (free treats are always nice) but my little bro was not too impressed ‘For €8 I expected more’. He is not wrong, 7 truffles for €8 is not the very best value in the world ever. He purchased these at a veg stall in the local farmer’s market so I am wondering if the price is the same everywhere? Now I have a longing to visit O Conaill’s cafe in Cork for a hot chocolate ….
